Miniature hydrangeas

DSC00877.jpeg

We are lucky to live in a place where hydrangeas grow like crazy. They seem to love the sandy soil. So I’ve spent a lot of time staring at them while I water them, cut them, and especially while I’m painting them.
I found dried baby’s breath to resemble the tiny little petals that make up a hydrangea flower.

Supplies and Tools:

Dried baby’s breath (get at your local craft store or here)

Acrylic craft paint

Glue - I highly recommend Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue. I try to avoid using hot glue or super glue whenever I can, and this fast grab glue usually does the trick.

Tweezers

Craft knife

First, using the colors you want for your flower, make some balls out of polymer clay. Squish them a little so they’re kind of flat on one side. Poke a hole with a toothpick on the flat side before baking the clay

Cut a nice little stem from the dried baby’s breath and glue into the hole. With a knife, cut a lot of the little flowers off the stems.

This is the most time consuming part, but not so bad! I usually put on a podcast.

Put some glue on the clay ball, and with tweezers (I love the ones that came with my Cricut tools!) attach the little flowers one by one.

This is where the Aleene’s Fast Grab glue really comes in handy. You won’t have a wet glue slippery mess.

Done with the glue! You could just leave it white, or paint your favorite hydrangea color. My favorite is blue.

No painting skills required…

Get out a little paint in varying shades and blot/paint all around. I water down my paint a little, pick up a few shades on my brush and blot.

Now paint the stem the same way. Just a mix of browns and greens. For the leaves, cut some out of cardstock, paint and glue.

And there you have one flower!
